No, it's precisely because Russia has not responded kinetically that now it has painted itself in a corner where either it will start erasing countries from the map while betting the US will sit it out or it will be destroyed.

So it's clear which option Russian elites have picked -- there will be no erasing enemy countries off the map, it will be Russia that will be sacrificed instead.
And Putin is either pefectly OK with that or is powerless to stop it. His behavior suggests the former, but it doesn't really matter either way.
