Sorry - but demographics DO matter and always have. Pick any society in history - Aztec, Roman, Han, Egyptian, French, Kuwaiti - the demographic composition of the group directly influences the culture and politics of the entity.
For the Aztecs that’s simply not true. Yes, they started off as Nahuas of the Mexica tribe who founded and built the city of Tenochtitlan which became the center of the Aztec (Triple Alliance), but by the time the Spanish found Tenochtitlan it was mostly a mostly Mayan, Zapotec, Mixtec, Otomi, etc; all of which are specifically not Nahuas and are about as distant from Nahuas as Germans are to Slavs genetically and much more so linguistically. Nahuas in Tenochtitlan really only existed in the nobility and the warriors at that point.
There’s practically no mexica alive today outside of what some Mexicans pretend them; and most of the Nahuas that still exist are in very rural areas of south Mexico and El Salvador (plus a chunk of them from that group who moved to the American Southwest). The Nahuatl language you see spoken among some indigenous communities there is mostly as a former Lingua Franca.
Italy was an even more blatant example which went through three big demographic shifts. Italy and Latins despite having cultural similarity to the Greeks were genetically closer to the celts they fought than to the Greeks. However Greeks settled the southern portion and mixed further north bringing Italy into the Mediterranean fold. These Greco-Italian transplants which is what many republican Roman’s were would eventually settle Gaul and Iberia which were considered much more empty at the time and many mixed with the locals. However, by the time of the late Pax Romana, most of what we consider Urban Latins would’ve been mixed race Middle Easterners due to all roads leading to Rome. However these mixed MENAs were all urbanized and so had a demogrpahic dearth. The only people who had kids were various Europeans, Deacendents of the Gauls or New Germanics; plus a rural minority group in Italy which are the ancestors of most modern Italians. By the time of the Middle Ages, Italy had demographically returned to Europe in many ways plus a rural Mediterranean Italian group which survived the collapse of the classical world. Genetic true Roman Latins only survived in various Balkan enclaves, but more importantly southern France. Only a really peripheral group of Latins survived to the modern day.
The moral of the story is besides some rare examples like China, normally what happens is the original imperial population is cannibalized for the empire; with the only remnants of the empire being random peripheral settler groups which managed to escape the megalopolis. Northeastern U.S. is mostly deracinated Europeans, not old stock Americans and this has become true in the south in recent years too as that area gets richer and more developed. Rural Old stock Americans in any meaningful capacity really only survive in western states especially borderland ones. Outside of the elites, The last of them left to California or other places there. Meanwhile Amish people are growing rapidly out east. Meanwhile the west is basically reverting back to being Spanish and Amerindian with the U.S. de facto being a much more indigenous country today than Canada and large parts of Latin America.
Only the rural, the rooted, and the stubborn survive history.
